CHILDREN in Swindon are fanning the flames of excitement and getting into the Olympic spirit.
Pupils from St Mary’s School, Purton, proudly received a cluster Olympic Torch – a representation of the Olympic flame – on Friday after it had been taken there from Longleaze School in Wootton Bassett.
The school will look after the torch for a fortnight as it travels around primary schools in North Wiltshire.
Each school has chosen a country for a theme, with Japan being St Mary’s.
As the torch arrived at the school, accompanied by the same police escort that will follow the real Olympic flame when it travels through Swindon, pupils gathered in the playground, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing.
In a formal presentation, the torch was handed over to headteacher Ian Tucker by Longleaze pupils, who were dressed in Spanish attire.
Teachers are hoping that the torch will help raise awareness among pupils of both the Olympics and the values that go with them.
“Integrity, endeavour and achievement are central themes,” said Mr Tucker.
“The children have been very enthusiastic and are looking forward to the Olympics.”
Several activities are planned for the pupils, including a karate demonstration and presentations from the parents of Japanese pupils.
The torch leaves the school in two weeks when it travels to Wootton Bassett Infants’ School.
