A GROUP of adventurous Swindon school children will be heading up a mountain tomorrow to raise money for charity.

Twelve pupils from Robert Le Kyng Primary School will be climbing Sugar Loaf Mountain in Wales to support Help for Heroes.

At almost 600 metres high, the mountain will present a demanding challenge for the Year 6 children.

“The weather forecast is showing signs of rain which will make it a bit harder,” said Dave Barnett, who works in pupil support at the school and has organised the climb, “but the children are very fit so it shouldn’t be a huge problem.” The climb is the latest task the school has organised to raise funds for the charity Help for Heroes.

Last November, 60 Year 6 pupils walked six miles from Avebury to Barbury and raised more than £1,350.

The school is hoping that as well as raising money for charity, the climb will help with the children’s development.

“The support last year was fantastic and we raised a huge amount. This time, while the children are away, the rest of the school will be bringing in sponsorship,” said Mr Barnett.

“Things like this are good for the children as it allows them to get out of the classroom and learn real-life skills such as teamwork and determination.”

The pupils have been preparing meticulously for their adventure. They have learnt about the equipment they will need if the weather does turn bad as well as practising their orienteering skills at Lydiard Park.

“We have learnt about how to read a map and what we will need, “said Amber Burn, 11. “We all have our waterproofs and walking boots.”

When asked what he was looking forward to the most, Ryan Pearce, 10, said “I am looking forward to reaching the top with my friends.”
