THE Magic Roundabout, Swindon College and Wharf Green will become part of Olympic history as the torch passes through the town.
Officials have revealed that the Olympic flame, which arrives in Swindon on May 23, will travel up Kingshill, passing the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, before turning down Victoria Road and reaching the town centre.
The torch relay will stop at Wharf Green, where the Big Screen is showcasing its travels, and will then navigate the Magic Roundabout and go up to Swindon College in North Star and the BMW Plant in Gipsy Lane.
Torchbearer Damien Davis, 36, of Cricklade, said: “It will be pretty amazing. The Olympic Games last came here in 1948, it is going to be a truly once in a lifetime experience.”
People are encouraged to line the route on May 23 and get involved in activities organised by Swindon Council and inSwindon BID at Wharf Green from noon until 2pm.
Children from Robert Le Kyng, King William Street, Lethbridge, Lainesmead and Holy Rood Junior schools will be taking part in festivities on the day.
Damien was nominated to become a torchbearer after he set up Team Wayne to raise money for Leukaemia And Lymphoma Research in memory of his friend Wayne Wilson, who lost his battle with leukaemia last year.
The team raised more than £11,000 for the charity following their attempt to climb the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales, which made it into national headlines.
“We ended up climbing the wrong mountain, but it worked wonders for our fundraising total,” he said.
“The Olympic Flame route is clearly mapped out so I’m sure there’s no risk of getting lost this time.
“I am so proud to represent what Team Wayne stands for and will be running with Wayne along my side, holding that torch up in the air with great pride indeed.”
Damien set up the group with Wayne’s friends and brother, and Wayne’s mother Kay Wright nominated Damien for the role of torchbearer after all his hard work.
Swindon is one of more than 1,000 towns, cities and villages on the torch relay route and one of just 22 places with a live Big Screen site.
Coun Garry Perkins, Swindon Council deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration and culture, said: “The flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and we’re thrilled that it’s coming to Swindon.
“Sharing the route it will be carried along by local torchbearers now means communities can think about how to celebrate and get involved in this special journey.
“Together we can all make this Swindon’s moment to shine and I look forward to hearing about your exciting plans.”
The Olympic flame will light up the streets of Chiseldon and Wroughton before it reaches Swindon.
The flame will not be visible at all times on the route, so a map has been created showing when and where it is on display. To see it visit www.swindon.gov.uk/2012.
A system of rolling road closures will be in place along the route of the torch relay.
