I didn’t expect to be moved so much by a knock-kneed granny in her 70s wearing a pair of old jeans who was cheered to the rafters by the sisters.
But they don’t get any bigger or better than Joan Baez, so I wasn’t alone in letting the tears flow when she sang Diamonds and Rust at the New Theatre in Oxford on Monday night.
She’s coming to the end of a UK tour and, like everywhere else, there was barely an empty seat in front of an enthusiastic audience for a show which lasted almost two hours.
Time for bed, she mimed, after two encores, which included John Lennon’s Imagine.
There can’t be as many people who sing almost as well as when as they started 50 years ago. But believe me she was stunningly brilliant.
As well as Diamonds and Rust and a host of others it was good to hear The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Love is Just a Four Letter Word.
She’s been battling for causes all her life and I don’t think she’s finished yet. I guess she’ll be singing on her deathbed... and that’s going to be sometime yet.
Just a wonderful night. Thank you.
