A GROUP of women got on their bikes to launch a new cycling event in the town.
Cycletta is a series of women-only bike rides which take place on safely managed routes and is aimed at inspiring female cyclists.
They are fronted by Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton and take place over an achievable distance of either 40km or 60km.
All participants are encouraged to fundraise for Macmillan Cancer Support to help improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
Last year about 1,600 women took part in two Cycletta events and this year Cycletta is holding seven events across the UK on the back of the feedback from last year’s participants.
This year they are hosting the first Cycletta Wiltshire in and around Lydiard Park, where they hope to welcome about 800 female cyclists on June 24 to enjoy a day out on their bikes Victoria said: “Being able to cycle with so many girls during Cycletta last year was one of my highlights of 2011.
“Now 2012 should be a special year and I really hope that thousands more women will join me on a bike this year.
“Cycletta is the perfect event to get on two wheels with the girls and have some fun.”
Coun Garry Perkins, the deputy leader of Swindon Council and the cabinet member responsible for Lydiard Park, said: “I am delighted that Cycletta has chosen Lydiard Park as the venue to host its cycling event especially as those taking part will be raising money for such a good cause.
“It will be fantastic to see so many cyclists enjoying Lydiard’s beautiful parkland and I would urge as many women as possible to sign up to the event.”
