FORGET about the twelfth man, Swindon Town will have God on their side when they take on Chesterfield tomorrow.
Club chaplain the Reverend Simon Stevenette has had to draft in substitutes for his Sunday work as he will travel to Wembley for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.
His regular 8am Sunday service at Christ Church, in Old Town, will go ahead as usual but the vicar will then hotfoot it to London to see his beloved Reds, for whom he has been chaplain for 13 years.
Rev Stevenette said he is a firm believer Town can pull off a historic win in their first Wembley cup final since the 1969 League Cup win over Arsenal.
“I’m definitely going – I would not miss it for the world,” he said.
“Fortunately I can do my regular Sunday service at 8am and then I’m getting a lift with my three boys just after 9am.
“It will be Hugo’s first trip to Wembley as he is only seven – he’s really looking forward to it.
“I’ve been able to get a number of friends from the diocese to cover me for a number of baptisms on the day so I have to thank them for that.
“I’ve been chaplain for 13 years now and it will be a great day out which I am looking forward to.
“I went to training yesterday and met the players. They were working hard.
“They look ready for it and and I think if I had to predict the score I would say 3-1 to Town – I’m a man of faith.
“To be quite honest it will be like a World Cup final for us and there will prayers said for Town back here at Christ Church. If they do win, of course, it will be huge for the club and the town.”
