PEOPLE across the town are being encouraged to take inspiration from the Olympic Games and enter this year’s Nationwide Swindon Half Marathon.
The 13.1-mile race, five-mile multi-terrain and two-mile fun run will be run on Sunday, October 14, and entries open on Sunday.
Last year’s race hit the headlines when Swindon Town manager Paolo Di Canio, who was the official starter, took part in the fun run before having a change of heart and completing the half marathon course. Organisers hope many more will follow his lead.
The half marathon, organised by Swindon Council and sponsored by Nationwide Building Society, starts on the southern edge of Swindon and winds its way through some of the prettiest neighbouring villages, taking in outstanding views that more than compensate for the undulating parts of the course the runners face, before heading back into town.
Event registrations, including on-the-day entries for the multi-terrain and fun run will be administered by Sports Systems and a number of local charities will be hoping to benefit from runners supporting the event this year.
Steve Connolly, race director, said: “The half marathon is a fantastic event for Swindon and I hope the community takes the opportunity to get involved.
“We had a great turnout last year and Paolo added to the occasion when he unexpectedly ran the half marathon course. I hope more runners of all abilities register for the half marathon this year and the event continues to go from strength to strength.”
Half marathon competitors must be aged 17 or over on race day and anyone running the multi-terrain must be 15 years or over.
The two-mile fun run is for all the family, but children under eight must be accompanied by an adult who has also entered the race. All finishers in all of the races will receive a medal along with the satisfaction and achievement of crossing the finish line. Pacemakers will also once again be employed.
Chad Rogerson, Nationwide’s senior citizenship manager, said: “We are delighted to offer our support for this great event within the Swindon social calendar, which brings together families, runners and supporters from across the area.
“This is the last time that Nationwide is providing headline sponsorship for the event after nine years of involvement and we would like to thank Swindon Council for giving us the opportunity to be involved during this time.
“We will continue to act as facilities sponsor for the event ensuring runners and spectators can use Nationwide’s car parking facilities, allowing the race to start and finish just off Pipers Way.
“The society’s security team also offer free surveillance of the car park during this time.”
