A WHO’S who of Swindon DJs will jump behind the decks tonight to remember BBC Wiltshire presenter Sandy Martin, a year on from his death.
Sandy died last March, aged 53, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour five months previously.
The fundraising event, at the King’s Arms, in Wood Street, Old Town, will be attended by DJs who worked with the broadcaster.
They include Paul Lewis, Tony McClusky, Glynn Prince, Soulful Leo, Darren D and Raj.
Sandy’s friends have held a themed night at the end of every month since he died to keep his memory alive, and put on a similar fundraiser last year.
Tony, who used to spin the decks with Sandy at the former Brunel Rooms, said: “Sandy was our mate, and he would have done the same for any one of us.
“We made over £1,000 last year and we want to keep the fund going.
“It’s not just about remembering Sandy as a person, but also the work he was doing, as he was always fundraising for other people.”
The dad of three was well-known to tens of thousands of people across the county.
He began his radio career with a weekly Disco Trekkin’ programme on commercial station GWR while still a successful nightclub DJ at Swindon’s Brunel Rooms, before moving to the BBC, based in Old Town.
Sandy hosted a wide range of shows, including the World Tour of Wiltshire and a series of fundraising concerts featuring artists such as Jamie Cullum and Justin Hayward.
He also had a spell as BBC Wiltshire’s Man with a Van, when he went out on the streets gathering powerful, emotional interviews with ordinary people which were broadcast as “your stories from your place”.
The DJ was also one of the main organisers of BBC Wiltshire’s carol concert at Salisbury Cathedral in December 2009 and 2010 and the city centre Christmas lights switch-on in Salisbury.
Tony said: “Sandy was a household name who put Swindon on the map as far as DJing goes.
“I worked with him at the Brunel Rooms, as did a lot of the other guys, but he was known right across the county.
“All the old DJs will be coming out to support the fund.”
The event takes place tonight from 8pm.
Tickets are available from the King’s Arms, priced £3.
All proceeds go the Sandy Martin Memorial Fund.
