AN AIR cadet squadron is celebrating a year of success as it bids to win a top trophy.

The cadets of 633 (West Swindon) Squadron have stepped up training with eight youngsters achieving their communication qualification.

The group has completed a hat-trick of successes with Cadet Sergeant Matthew Cordas becoming the third in three years to be awarded the civic role of the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Wiltshire.

It comes as they vie with other local groups for the title of Best Squadron in the Corps, and win the Lees Trophy, with an inspection taking place on Monday.

Cdt Sgt Cordas has been carrying out his service after receiving the award in 2011, including being on duty at the Remembrance Parade in Swindon last year.

He followed Cdt Warrant Officer Emma-Louise Parker and Cdt Sgt Christopher Wilson, who were each appointed by Lord Lieutenant for Wiltshire John Bush after they showed exceptional performance to their service and the community.

West Swindon Squadron leader Flight Lieutenant Helene Woodham said: “All three cadets have been attending the local squadron since the age of 13 and have individually shown exceptional commitment to the Air Training Corps through activities on and off their squadron.”

Cirencester College student Matthew, who was also among those who recently completed the communication course, said: “Becoming a Lord Lieutenant Cadet is a huge honour, and I am thrilled.”

The Squadron invested in specialist radio equipment to help cadets learn communication skills that can be applied outside of the ATC.

Flt Lt Woodham said: “The squadron has recently invested in some new radio kit that will be used not only for the standard cadet radio training and exercises, but also for use outside of the squadron.”

l The Squadron meets on Monday and Friday evenings from 7pm to 9pm at Westlea Primary School, Langstone Way.
