A MAN who drowned in a canal in Wiltshire on Friday evening has been named by police.
Gary Smith, 46, from Devizes, was rescued from a lock on the Caen Hill stretch of the Kennet and Avon in Devizes at 8.20pm on Friday.
Despite being treated at the scene and taken by air ambulance to Great Western Hospital in Swindon, he died two hours later.
A 47-yea-old woman, who was at the scene, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and was taken to Melksham police station. She has since been bailed until early May.
A post-mortem examination confirmed Mr Smith had died from drowning.
A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said his family have been informed.
Detectives continue to appeal for anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident and may have seen what happened. It is believed that the man and woman had been drinking in Devizes from 2pm. During the late afternoon they were sitting by the canal at Caen Hill.
