THE GRAND 100-day countdown to the greatest show on earth began in Swindon today.

Children from five primary schools walked from the Cenotaph to the town centre to the live site at Wharf Green before forming a giant 100 figure for an aerial picture to be taken, which marked the start of many special 2012 moments in Swindon.

Entering the sporting spirit, the children then took part in an interactive game called Dodge Dash Dive and competed against other Big Screen sites across the country.

An Olympic-themed quiz also tested the youngsters creative skills in making torches ready for when the Torch Relay comes to town on Wednesday, May 23.

Athletes, volunteers and torchbearers are also set to join in the festivities in the summer.

Torchbearer Carney Bonner, 18, from Priory Vale, said: “It is such an incredible honour to be picked. I couldn’t believe it at first, but now it’s so close I’m really excited and a bit nervous too. I hope I don’t drop it.”

Carney, a business student, was nominated by his girlfriend Matilda for his commitment to helping young people.

He said: “I’m severely dyslexic and have had people say: ‘you’re not going to do anything in life.’ That has always spurred me on to do more and also help others who might be struggling.

“I’m carrying the Flame for everyone who has got over issues and, like me, achieved things beyond their wildest dreams.”

The event was co-ordinated by The London 2012 Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOGCO) in partnership with inSwindon BID and Swindon Council.

Bernie Brannan, Swindon Council board director for service delivery, said: “This is an exciting day, which signals the start of a very special countdown.

“Sporting excellence thrives in Swindon and our local Torchbearers really capture the tremendous spirit of the Olympics.

“There are all sorts of events and activities taking place in the run-up to and during the Games, and I encourage everyone to join in the fun.”

Simon Jackson, chief executive of inSwindon, said: “It’s a great opportunity for us to start to gather momentum for the excitement of the Olympics. We are encouraging as many people as possible to take full advantage of Swindon being one of only 22 live sites across the country and welcome everyone down to take part.”
