CAR enthusiast Will Gibney, who compiled a wish list after being diagnosed with a rare incurable kidney cancer, has thanked the Adver for our support.
Since appearing in the paper in February after finding out he had Renal Cell Carcinoma, the 28-year-old, of Old Town, has been overwhelmed with the amount of support he has received.
He has even been able to tick off a number of items on his wish list, which is based mainly around his love of cars.
Last month, he appeared in the audience of the TV programme Top Gear and he spent last week at The Nurburgring Formula One circuit with Castrol in Germany.
And as a direct result of our articles, Will has been offered the chance to drive Jenson Button’s 2004 F1 car.
He said: “After reading the story in the Adver, I was contacted by Debbie White from Castrol in Swindon and she offered me a place on the Castrol Edge Nurburgring Experience with my friend Joe Walsh.
“We had the most incredible couple of days and were let loose on the tracks for two days in BMW’s latest M cars.
“It was an amazing opportunity to drive some incredible cars on the most challenging track in the world, and the way we were looked after by the Castrol Edge team was just incredible.”
Will, who is now back on treatment and ‘doing well’, has even spent a day in Ferrari Enzo and F50 sports cars, and has seen his blog reach newspapers around the world.
He said: “My blog was also written about in one of Finland’s biggest national newspapers after someone spotted it on the Adver website.
“That night, the blog had nearly 10,000 views, including Tony Svartsjö who runs a company called Speedpassion out in Finland. His company put together all kinds of motorsport events, and he got in contact with one of his friends, Johan Rajamaki who happens to own Jenson Button’s 2004 F1 car.
“Thankfully, Johan was happy for me to drive his unbelievably rare car and so I’m flying out to Finland at the end of May.
“All of these things are unbelievable opportunities that have only become available because of the Adver, so thank you.”
Recently, he was also taken for a spin in the new McLaren MP4-12C, organised by his friend Lucy Eames.
