QUICKSAND, electric shocks and a freezing water course will all be part of the challenge for Luke Knapp when he takes on one of Europe’s toughest races.
The 23-year-old, of Toothill, will be tackling a gruelling 11-mile obstacle course over wires, reinforced steel and construction debris on May 5, after being chosen to represent Team GB at the Fisherman’s Friend Strongman Run.
Luke, founder of personal training company, Switch on Fitness, was hand-picked to take on the challenge against 10,000 runners, which is notorious for pushing competitors from across the globe to their limits.
“This is going to be a real challenge and I’m sure the competition will be fierce, but I am so up for it,” said Luke.
“I’ve been training really hard over the past couple of months, taking on terrains including mud, sand and water and running night and day. I’m hoping the hard work will pay off and I’ll do Team GB proud.”
Luke will be travelling to the Nürburgring in Germany – home to the world’s most famous motor racing tracks – to brave 28 intimidating obstacles including quicksand, fire, tyre mountains, gravity-defying muddy gradients and electric shocks, followed by a freezing water course.
Luke has undergone a rigorous training regime in preparation for the challenge.
The recent winner of a silver medal in the National UMA Groundfighting Championships, he has taken part in a wide range of sports over the years, from strength training such as Kettlebells and TRX, to Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and rugby.
Heading up Team GB and competing for the sixth year in a row is Fisherman’s Friend spokesman Chris Gibson.
“This year, the course is going to be more exhausting and harder than ever,” said Chris.
“This is not just about physical fitness: it’s about competitors who have real strength of mind and character. We are delighted to have Luke representing Team GB. He has all the experience and qualities to be a real contender for the strongman title.”
Luke will be joining 14 other members of Team GB to take part in the race.
