THE town’s most famous blonde will be part of an opera scaling the high and low notes of the town’s history.

Diana Dors, played by soprano Polly Leech, will be the narrator of Swindon: The Opera, which will be performed at the Steam Museum in July.

The opera, which is being produced by the Janice Thompson Performance Trust who won a £60,000 Jubilee lottery grant, covers life in Swindon from 1952 to the present day.

Polly, 20, who was supreme champion of the Swindon Music Festival 2011, said: “I’m honoured to be playing Diana Dors as she was arguably Swindon’s most famous daughter and a true heroine.

“I enjoyed the recent photoshoot and am looking forward to showcasing Swindon with the rest of the cast.”

The action follows a fictional family called the Eveleys going through the major events that have happened in Swindon over the past 60 years.

One of the Hollywood star’s roles in the opera will be to keep a panel of cynics in order. They will be played by John Milford, Stephanie Walsh, Shaun Holley, Sophia Bovell, Peter Kent, Katherine Hunt, Bob Desmond and Becci Smith, The cynics will provide the show’s comedy by watching and commenting on the action.

Matt Fox, trustee of the JTP Trust and writer of the opera, said: “One of the main reasons for producing Swindon: The Opera is to counteract the critical hammering which Swindon often receives for its apparent lack of culture.

“The cynics are an eight-strong panel of great characters who will be legitimately put in their place for mocking and pre-judging Swindon’s cultural history.”

Composed by London-based Betty Roe MBE, the production will form part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The JTP Trust Chorus, who are part of the opera, sang in Worldsong! at the Royal Albert Hall earlier this month.

The team will also be starting workshops in schools throughout Swindon this week.

Swindon: The Opera will be performed on July 7 and 8 at the Steam Museum, with two performances each day.
