A RUGBY player is calling for sponsors to help him realise his dream of a shot at the big time in Australia.
Gareth Hughes, of Upper Stratton, has landed a trial with ACT Brumbies, in Canberra, which could lead to a place in their development squad.
He previously featured in the Adver in 2008 when he joined Auckland rugby academy in New Zealand before his trip was cut short.
The 23-year-old Swindon Supermarine player, suffered a shoulder injury but has recovered and is itching to make up for lost time.
The Brumbies are a professional team whose matches in the Super Rugby league are televised on Sky.
“Athletes always dream of a second chance and this is mine,” Gareth said.
“This is a great opportunity to go out and make a name for myself.
“Ideally I would move over there if it works out.
“I’m saving up for a one-way flight if needs be and I’ve found one for £501, but I would like to get a return.
“I've written to all kinds of companies, including Adidas, and I’m just waiting to see if any of them will help me out.
“If it means wearing their logo I’ll do it for the chance to get to Australia.”
Gareth’s achievements include playing for Welsh Exiles and Dorset and Wilts and being players’ player of the year at Bath Academy.
He works as a customer service adviser for Mercedes-Benz but wants to concentrate on rugby.
He said: “I played for a year and a bit at the Auckland Rugby Academy before I came back with the shoulder injury.
“My skill level went up and I was a lot fitter but I was tackling huge Samoan props and it just went.
“I needed reconstruction work on my shoulder and I lost my focus and got a bit down.
“But I got myself back up and I am fitter and stronger than I have ever been.”
The scrum half is aiming to raise £1,200. Anyone interested in funding him should email hughes gareth9@gmail.com .
