WHEN saxophonist Daisy Faulkner wrote to the Queen to tell her she dreamed of playing for her, she never would have guessed her wish would be coming true.

Daisy, 14, who is a pupil at Kingsdown School, received a letter from the queen in 2010 after she wrote to tell her how much she enjoys playing music.

The Swindon Young Musicians member will be fulfilling her ambition on Tuesday when she plays as part of Swindon Jazz Band in front of the Queen at a concert for the Diamond Jubilee at Salisbury Cathedral.

“I wrote a letter to the Queen in October 2010. I was just saying it would be my dream to perform for her and I told her about all my involvement with the Swindon Young Musicians, the instruments I play and how much I enjoy music,” said Daisy.

“Then recently the jazz band I am part of have been asked to perform at Salisbury Cathedral. We have been chosen out of lots of different groups. I don’t know if it’s because of my letter, but our jazz band has a high standard and people know we are good.

“I am nervous but I just can’t wait. I have just got to try my hardest. I am not going to get another chance like this.”

Swindon Jazz Band, which is part of Swindon Young Musicians, is one of only two jazz bands playing at the concert.

“I think the Queen will like it. I definitely know she won’t forget us. All the stuff we play we are really enthusiastic about and we are all really smiley. I think she will be really happy, she will be singing along,” said Daisy.

Daisy, who hopes to be a musician and a music teacher when she is older, wrote to the Queen when she was 12 years old in the hope it would help progress her future career.

“I was just watching something and she came on telly and I thought to get a good reputation I want to write to the Queen. My parents didn’t think I would get a reply,” she said.

“I told her if I practise I will get my dream of performing to her. I got a reply from her lady in waiting and it had quotes from the Queen.

“I was just so shocked that she had actually spent her time replying to me because obviously she has got better things to do. When I got a letter back I just thought ‘wow’.”

Swindon Jazz Band has about 10 saxophonists, 10 trumpet players, a singer, and musicians playing the guitar, bass and piano.

Daisy, who has been playing with the Swindon Young Musicians for about six years, has been playing the saxophone for four years, has played the flute for six years, and also plays the recorder.
