AN OUTFIT worn by Shirley Bassey, a car covered in mosaic and piano book signed by Jamie Cullum are just some of the items that will be up for grabs at a silent auction for Help for Heroes.

Former serviceman Colin Jackson, of Covingham, has collected dozens of items to be auctioned at an event at the De Vere Village Hotel in West Swindon in July.

Thousands of pounds were raised in a similar event he held last year and Colin is hoping to raise even more this time.

The 37-year-old, who served in the forces for eight years, said: “I’ve worked hard to get the prizes and there are some great items for people to bid for.

“I did the event last year and I kept up the contacts. I just write off to them and if they say they can’t donate I leave it, but nine times out of 10 they have sent something.

“I got to know Shirley Bassey’s personal driver and he is attending my event as well.”

Among the auction items is a 1980 MGB roadster covered in a mosaic made from old china tea sets, including one on the bonnet.

There is also a dress and hat worn by Shirley Bassey at Royal Ascot Day last June, and an original painting of the Help for Heroes bear, which was drawn by Bryn Parry, co-founder of Help for Heroes.

Colin said: “As a former serving soldier in the army, I have seen first hand what injuries are caused in a war environment.

“As individuals we are powerless to prevent war. We feel helpless that we are unable to stop our people from being killed and wounded.

“By joining together as Help for Heroes, we are doing something practical to help. We are doing our bit.”

Colin is hoping to beat the total from last year, which was more than £7,000.

Just 20 out of 240 tickets are left for the event, which will also include a live band, raffle and dinner.

Other auction items include a VIP visit to the Red Arrows for two, a signed Take That CD, a t-shirt signed by James Bond actor Daniel Craig, and signed rugby, cricket and golf items.
