A MAN who raped a woman following a night out has been jailed for six years.
Fareed Tariq, 31, was found guilty of rape at Swindon Crown Court.
Speaking after the sentence today, investigating officer, DCI Owen Gillard said: “During Tariq’s trial, the court heard how he deceived the victim into getting in to his car by offering her a lift.
"He then took her to a deserted car park and raped her before leaving her in a distressed state to make her own way home.
"Tariq not only subjected this woman to a terrifying ordeal but he has shown no remorse for his actions having put her through the added trauma of a trial.
"I would like to use this opportunity to commend the victim for the courage and dignity that she has shown throughout the judicial process. Without her continued assistance, the outcome today would not have been possible.
"We encourage anyone, child or adult, who has been the victim of a sexual assault to tell someone. If you don’t want to report it to police, you can tell a trusted adult who can report it on your behalf, not only so that the offender can be identified but to ensure that you are provided with the appropriate help and support.
"Rape is an extremely serious offence and one that has an enormous impact on victims and their families. We hope that the outcome of the trial today will offer this woman some piece of mind as she continues to come to terms with what happened to her.”
