THE race is on to raise money for young adults at the Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group and cyclist Rob Dentry has stepped up to the mark.
The 32-year-old, of Oakhurst, is cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats to raise money to send 18 youngsters with Down’s syndrome on the Salamander Fire Service course this summer and so far he has collected nearly £1,000.
The course, which costs £5,000 to run, gives youngsters the chance to spend a week with firefighters at Swindon Fire Station. It takes place in August.
Rob, who is a PCSO in Highworth, said the group made an impression on him when he volunteered at the course last year.
“They’re such a good bunch and it would be a shame for them not to do it,” he said.
Rob started the challenge on April 20 in Cornwall and is on the second stage of his 874-mile journey, having passed the Lake District.
He has been cycling from 8.30am to 9pm in order to reach John O’ Groats by tomorrow.
“I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has sponsored me and encourage everyone else to get their hands in their pockets,” said Rob.
“It’s hard work, I’m a bit saddle-sore, but it’s good fun. You get to meet new people as you travel and it’s nice to go out and switch off a bit.”
Joanna Messenger, secretary for Swindon Down’s Group and mother of 15-year-old Oliver, said the course was a vital way to boost the youngsters’ confidence. “Oliver loves the excitement of the fire engines, being with his friends and having that little bit of independence,” she said.
The group still needs £1,500 for the course to go ahead. To sponsor Rob visit justgiving.com/Nicky-Parker6.
