The party leaders candidates explain vote for them and independent why you should and their party
Steve Halden, Social Democratic Party
A BRIGHT, sparkling future awaits the young generation of today, through the policies for growth proposed by the Social Democratic Party.
Britain now has a golden opportunity for a campaign against unemployment. Our campaign against unemployment would require the British Government to buy more goods made in Britain. Every time the Government buys British-made goods it creates jobs for British workers. This is the path to full employment and economic growth.
The SDP will represent the working class regardless of race or colour, and create jobs in manufacturing, tourism and agriculture.
The SDP says no to public spending cuts, no to increasing pensioners’ tax, and no extra tax on beer.
Peace and prosperity are SDP core beliefs, including a good education, better training, quality workmanship, building new council houses, improving community centres, quiet residential areas, with a priority to helping pensioners and children.
The SDP believes that higher wages will make people stronger and work harder. We want to build family life, and create a better future for you and your children.
A negotiated peace in Iraq and Afghanistan would mean that we could bring our brave troops safely home to Britain. The SDP stands for peace and prosperity.
Carl Morecroft, the Official Monster Raving Loony Party
“WHEN discords, and quarrels, and factions are carried openly and audaciously, it is a sign the reverence of government is lost.” – Francis Bacon.
We are the loonies and our success is a symbol of the failure of politics. We are Lordi at Eurovision. The more successful we are at the polls, the greater the force of a message that says to the major parties that they need to be less loony. To that end we will follow a no-policy policy and engage in rampant, ruinous, dangerous populism. We will pander to mobs and entertain their every whim. We will entertain ideas such as: war between the wards; chariot races around the Magic Roundabout; protect the ozone layer from harmful emissions – catalytic converters will be fitted to all underwear; introduce a five-day weekend and a two-day week; to reduce crime and stop burglars breaking into your house, we’ll replace all the locks with bra fasteners.
We are the most truthful party in that we admit that everything we say is a lie (including this). If you don’t normally vote, then don’t vote normally! Let the Loony Revolution begin! Vote Loony, Loony, Loony, Loony. Go Loonies. Yes, quite.
Rod Bluh, leader of the Conservatives
SWINDON’S residents should re-elect the Conservatives because we are the only party that has a record of action and a promise of more.
We turned one of the worst 12 councils in England into one of the most efficient and cost effective.
We have built or refurbished 14 schools, built a new Central Library, extended the opening hours at others and created a new Register Office at the Civic. With Highworth Town Council we saved the Rec. We renovated Lydiard Park and turned Steam into a commercial success. We increased kerbside weekly recycling collection to over 50 per cent cutting millions off our tax bill. Our chief executive accepted two pay cuts and we cut one-third of the senior manager posts. We cut car parking charges and town centre footfall soared to name just a few achievements.
Building the £350m Union Square development has started and £65m will be spent on refurbishing the Oasis and getting a SnowDome. We are building a new village centre at Eldene along with spending over £700,000 on seven village centres including Freshbrook, Liden and Covingham and much, much more.
Only we have delivered balanced budgets and many years of low or no council tax rises.
Bill Hughes, co-ordinator for the Green Party
A GREEN vote is a positive signal to everyone that we can solve the social, financial and environmental crisis we face.
A Swindon Green New Deal programme will ensure every home is properly insulated, double or triple glazed and where appropriate fitted with solar roof panels or alternative energy-saving measures. Housing will be renovated and empty homes brought into use rather than the unwanted mega-developments on greenfield sites such as Coate and Wichelstowe.
Your Green vote will also go to promoting better public transport, lower fares and traffic calming in all residential areas. Facilities for pedestrians and cyclists greatly improved. A Green vote is for a healthier life and responsible citizenship rather than the eternal Punch and Judy wrangling of the other parties.
