TIME is running out to apply for a Jubilee street party.
If you are planning a right Royal knees-up with your neighbours, Monday is the deadline to apply for a street closure.
So far, Swindon Council has approved 21 applications for street closures, for which there is no charge, over the extended bank holiday weekend between Saturday, June 2 and Tuesday, June 5.
Traditional children’s games, a bunting competition and a special Jubilee cake are among the highlights of the festivities planned in Colbert Park, Abbey Meads.
Carrie Hobkirk, 34, is one of the event organisers.
She said: “We had a street party for the Royal Wedding and it was brilliant, especially for the children. This year we’re more organised and getting more people involved. We’re a really friendly, close-knit community so it’s lovely to be able to get together.
The Silver Jubilee was the year I was born. Jubilees don’t come round very often and I think more and more people want to celebrate it.
“We’ll be having games like egg and spoon, three-legged races and rounders. The children, including my daughter Kira, are getting excited and it’s good fun for adults .”
More than 130 people are expected to turn out for the celebrations planned in The Street, Liddington.
Gordon Wilson, chairman of Liddington Parish Council and one of the organisers, said: “The response has been enthusiastic and most of the main arrangements are in place, from catering to setting up bunting.
“It’s all about getting to know your neighbours and other people in the village who you wouldn’t normally meet.
“A party was held for the Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977 and a resident who had just moved in at the time said how enjoyable it was and welcome it made them feel.”
