BLONDE bombshell Diana Dors is flying the flag for Swindon in an online poll of the greatest of Great Britons ahead of an exhibition later this year.

The Swindon siren tops the town’s small contingent in the Greats of Great Britain poll, which has been set up by the organisers of the Great Exhibition 2012 to celebrate the nation’s best and brightest.

She is joined by TV star Billie Piper and Swindon-born Gloucester Rugby player Nick Wood, as well as Lydiard Park and Steam Museum in the places to visit category.

At the time of going to press, Britain’s Got Talent winner Susan Boyle was in the with more than 5,500 votes, while bands JLS and McFly followed closely behind.

A spokeswoman for the Great Exhibition 2012 said if Diana Dors were to make it to 100 votes – she was on 85 yesterday – she would be shortlisted for an award later this year.

She said: “Diana is in the music and entertainment category with the likes of Adele and Susan Boyle and she is so close to the magic 100 votes, which means she will then automatically go forward for the Greats of Great Britain Awards.

“We want communities to nominate and vote for their favourites and celebrate Great Britain in 2012, as it is such a brilliant year for us with the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee.”

Organisers hope to recreate an exhibition on the scale of the innaugural Great Exhibition held at Crystal Palace in 1851.

CEO Julie Benson founded The Great Exhibition Co UK Ltd and launched the Great Exhibition 2012 when Britain was announced as the winner to host the Olympics.

A spokesman said: “The Great Exhibition 2012 would like to invite the whole of the country to join our online community and to nominate their own personal Great of Great Britain.

“This can be done by registering as an ambassador, creating a ‘Great’ and sharing your videos, photographs and stories.

“By putting your ‘Great’ on The Great Exhibition 2012 interactive map, you are supporting your region and promoting its products, places and people to the world – whether it’s favourite landscapes and coastlines, attractions and architecture, people and customs, towns and villages, as well as talented people. You can choose whatever or whoever to celebrate in your region.”
