DANGEROUS chemicals that can burn and even kill have been stolen from the science labs at Warneford School, in Highworth.
Thieves broke into the Shrivenham Road school on Friday at about 8.18pm and stole three glass bottles containing the flammable substances.
Headteacher John Saunders wants to warn the public about how dangerous they could be.
A 10g clear glass bottle containing sodium and two 10g dark brown glass bottles with black screw lids containing potassium, suspended in oil, were stolen.
"Access into the school was gained through a window," said Mr Saunders.
"The chemicals are allowed in school and were kept in small jars that were locked in a ground floor classroom that was alarmed.
"There are motion sensors in the room which set the alarm off.
"But by the time the caretaker got round to this side of the school the thieves had gone.
"We have no idea who could have done this and whether they intended to take the chemicals or not, but we are most concerned that if anyone finds them they should contact us or the police straight away.
"We have sent letters home today with pupils so we hope that may give us some information.
"We understand these chemicals can be dangerous so we would urge anyone who finds them not to touch them."
Swindon police are now appealing for information. Spokeswoman Alvina Kumar, said: "Sodium reacts violently with water and both chemicals burn vigorously and are very difficult to extinguish.
"Misuse or experiment by anyone not fully conversant with chemicals can result in serious consequences, even fatality."
Anyone with information is asked to call PC Martin Miles of Highworth Police on 0845 408 7000 or Crimestoppers, on 0800 555111.
