SWINDON Supermarine chairman Jez Webb says he feels the tide is turning after the club booked their place in the Southern League West play-off final.

Interim manager Lee Spalding guided Marine to the first play-off victory in the club’s history, as they beat Evesham United 5-4 on penalties in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

That set them up for a promotion showdown at Wimborne Town on Monday, with the winner being elevated to the Southern League Premier Division.

Webb has issued a rallying call to his team, who he insists are more than capable of winning promotion.

“I think it shows great progress as a football club. Evesham were a much better footballing side than us and always have been,” he said.

“Now, I just feel that in the last couple of seasons we have got the right quality and mentality in the right places.

“The attitude in the players is something I haven’t seen before, I just think we have made strides over the last few years. Our attendances at home are going up, we have more sponsors and we have more people involved at the club.

“It’s a happy time to be at Marine. We have had our misery. We’ve lost in the play-off semi-finals three times and it take a lot to get over that.

“Now we have Wimborne and they have taken a lot of people by surprise this year and when I think about it, I don’t think anyone had them down to finish in the top six.

“We can do it. We can absolutely do this.”

Webb, who opted for a change in management in January, saluted the work former boss Dave Webb did before Spalding stepped up.

“Talk about ups and downs, this has been a rollercoaster of emotions and it all came to a head on Wednesday night in five penalties,” he said.

“I must reflect and say what a great job Dave Webb did to get the nucleus of this side together, as well as the points that he got on the board.

“I feel for Evesham because they’re very nice. They understand the game and they are always very gracious in victory or defeat.

“It’s a miserable way to win a football match.”
