KEV Bridgeman will relish a third ‘free hit’ in the FA Vase after his Malmesbury Victoria side continued their giant-killing ways in the FA Vase on Saturday.
The Flying Monk ground men will travel to Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division leaders Sholing in the second round of the national competition on November 3 after adding Toolstation League Premier Division Roman Glass St George to their list of scalps on Saturday.
Second-half goals from Shane Bumphrey and Joe Tranter wrapped up the Hellenic League Division One West side’s progress, having previously sent Hellenic Premier outfit Virginia Water packing in the previous round.
Bridgeman, whose side were following by a coachload of 50-odd supporters at the weekend, reckons the Vics could not have pulled a harder tie than the tip to Hampshire next month, but insists his troops are enjoying upsetting the odds.
“To be fair, looking at he draw, I’m not sure we could have had a tougher one,’’ he told the Gazette & Herald.
“Sholing are top of their league, have won all of their matches and they won the Vase four years ago (2013-14 season).
“But nobody was really giving us a chance to go and win on Saturday and we did. The boys are absolutely relishing it. We’ve beaten two teams above us already so we can go to Southampton and give it a really good go.’’ The manager saluted his side for Saturday’s performance, not least as it came off the back of some iffy league displays.
“I was chuffed to bits,’’ added Bridgeman.
“We’d had a couple of poor league results but we were always confident.
“With the weather as it was - the wind was horrendous - it wasn’t the prettiest game of football but I think we just adapted to the conditions better than them (Glass).
“We had to be a little bit savvy and use things to our advantage but I never really felt that they were a threat to us all game.
“It’s a fantastic result and for us to have a busload of fans - about 50-odd people - following us and cheering us on made it very special.’’ Vics’ Wiltshire Senior Cup clash against Amesbury Town was postponed on Tuesday due to the referee being unwell and has been rearranged for November 23.
