In their final warm up match of the season, Supermarine took on National League South side Bath City at Webbswood Stadium.
Bath just missed out on promotion to the top flight of non-league recently and were expected to present a tough final examination with the likes of ex-Swindon Town man Tom Smith among their number.
Marine were at near full strength with recent injury victims Henry Spalding and Joe Shepherd on the bench.
A tightly contested first half saw them go in 0-0 at the break with the hosts looking strong defensively and dangerous on the break in attack.
The second half saw a few more tactial tweaks and changes to enable most of the squad to get a run out but despite this Marine were gaining in confidence and more than holding their own.
The opening goal on 62 minutes came against the run of play.
One of the Bath trialist players had a shot saved twice by home custodian Horsell but Tom Smith picked up on the rebound and fired home with some skill.
This gave the visitors the confidence to push on and it didn’t take too long before it was two – the unlucky Joe Shepherd putting into his own net after strong visiting pressure.
But rather than fold Supermarine had their strongest period of the game, Harry Williams played in Conor McDonagh for a tap in finish but the linesman adjudged him to have strayed offside.
But this did not deter the Spitfires and they got their just desserts when Matt Liddiard headed home a fine cross from Jamie Edge two minutes from time.
There was even late panic in the visiting ranks deep into injury time but Bath held firm to gain the win.
