SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb has set his sights on bringing in one if not two defenders over the next week.
Webb has been hunting for a left-back ever since stalwart Danny Allen retired in October and has made a seven-day approach for Mark Flanagan, who is currently plying his trade in the Hellenic League Premier Division with Oxford City Nomads.
The boss has also put an additional seven-day approach in for a Southern League centre-back who he hopes to recruit for his play-off chasing squad.
Webb has spoken to Flanagan about a move to South Marston but is concerned that there are sticking points that could cause problems in the deal.
“We’re trying to finalise something so that may or may not be done this week,” said Webb.
“We’ve spoken to Mark, he’s a good young player but it’s difficult because he’s Oxford-based and he’s being paid very well for the league he’s playing in.
“It’s about whether the finance is in place to bring him in.
“We’ve also got a seven-dayer in for a centre-half currently in this league but I can’t speak to him yet.
“It’s a really difficult one for us because we want to add to the squad but we have to work within the realms of a budget.
“We could (sign both players) but that just depends on how they go, I’ve watched players and I like them.
“We need someone to come in who is going to add quality rather than just be a squad player.”
Meanwhile, midfielder-cum-striker Gio Wrona has left Marine and signed for Division One South & West rivals Thatcham. The youngster has had few first-team chances at South Marston this term since joining in the summer.
Webb said: “He’s a lovely lad and a good player, he just needs to play regularly at this level.
“When Thatcham came along he was keen to give it a go and I can understand why he’s gone and I’ve got no problem with it.”
Bearing in mind recent postponements against Didcot, Cirencester and Guildford yesterday, Marine have a busy January ahead and Webb reckons the next four weeks will be key in the season.
“I think January is going to be a pretty big month for us,” he said.
“We’re going to be playing three times a week until the end of the month so there’s a lot of football to be played.
“The forecast for this weekend doesn’t look great so that could be another game that we will have to fit in.
“We just don’t want to get into a situation where we’ve got 11 games in a month like we did last year, because it’s too many to play.”
