REGARDLESS on what time of year Qatar holds the 2022 World Cup, former Swindon Town star Nicky Summerbee feels the Arab state will create a “phenomenal” spectacle.
Summerbee, who made more than 100 appearances for the Robins and won promotion to the Premier League with Town in 1993, has been living and working in Qatar in recent months for television station Al-Kass.
Therefore the 42-year-old has been afforded a sneak peek of the type of event Qatar is capable of staging and he couldn’t speak more highly about it.
“They’ve not put a shovel into the ground yet to build a stadium but they will do and it will be one of the wonders of the world,” he said.
“They’re going to do a proper job. It’s exciting to see how they’re going to do it, how they’re going to go about it - is it going to be a winter or a summer World Cup?
“Whatever it’s going to be, it’s going to be phenomenal. This will be one of the wonders of the world, I’m telling you that now.
“They will do it. There’ll be air conditioning, whatever you want - it’s going to be fantastic. We’re here now and it’s raw and it’s interesting to see how they’re going to do it.
“I was reading something the other day about Brazil’s one and how it’s struggling but these people will do it. It’s going to be phenomenal.”
