SWINDON Town manager Mark Cooper has vowed that his side with go into tonight’s Capital One Cup clash with Luton Town “all guns blazing”, as they chase a chance of facing the world’s biggest club in round two.
With Manchester United not involved in European football this season, the 20-time English league champions enter the League Cup at the second-round stage - and victory against Luton this evening will give Swindon a ticket to a lottery that Cooper reckons could be worth around £1million to one lucky club.
Therefore, the Robins boss is not anticipating anything but wholehearted determination from his players when they kick off at Kenilworth Road at around 7.45pm.
He said: “It is a money-spinner because you could win one game and get Man United away, which is straight away probably a million pounds. I’m sure that we could do with that so I’m sure we will be going all guns blazing, trying to get in the hat.”
“It’s going to be a test and it’ll be interesting to see how they react to it, but I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that we’ll react to it positively.
“We know that if we play - if we get the ball down and play if properly - we can cause teams problems. We’ve got a lot of players that are very comfortable in tight areas of the pitch, that can kill you if you press too early. They can cut you to pieces.
“We also know defensively we have work to do.
Luton, returning to the Football League this term after five years away, started their campaign with an impressive 1-0 victory at Carlisle United on the opening day, and Cooper knows his Town team is in for a stern examination of their resources tonight.
“It’ll be tough. They had a very good result (on Saturday). John Still’s teams are always really, really hard to play against. They’re really fit, really organised,” he said.
“Kenilworth Road is a difficult, hostile place to play and I’m sure they’ll make it really difficult for us. We’ll go and try to plan and do what we do.
“They’ve been too long out of the Football League. They’ve had a succession of managers, they’ve eventually got the right one and they’ll probably go from strength to strength now because they get big crowds, it’s historically a big club and I’m sure they’ll fly up the league.
“John is a nice guy. He’s a brilliant manager. His teams are always difficult to play against and I expect nothing different on Tuesday at Kenilworth Road.”
