SWINDON Town manager Mark Cooper is hopeful that his young squad is starting to learn the skills they need to grind out results on the road following their victory at Luton Town on Tuesday.
Having fallen behind to Luke Rooney’s penalty, Swindon showed signs that they may fall apart at Kenilworth Road - as happened so frequently on their travels last term, but they composed themselves and two goals from Michael Smith earned them only their third come-from-behind victory away from home under Cooper.
With two tricky trips to Crawley Town and Gillingham to come in the next five days, the Robins boss saw plenty to be encouraged by.
He told the Advertiser: “Maybe that can be a bit of a turning point for us, maybe they can get that belief that they can go behind and come through and win a game.
“I said to them afterwards ‘I hope that gives you belief that you can go away and people have a good go at you physically, you can go a goal behind and stand up and be counted, come through and win.
“Hopefully we’re not too depleted with injuries and we go and give a good account of ourselves in the next two - Crawley and Gillingham.”
The injuries Cooper referred to include Anton Rodgers, who is out for two weeks with a knee problem, as well as Brad Smith (medial ligament), and Louis Thompson (dead leg), both of whom are doubts for the weekend visit to the Broadfield Stadium.
“I think when you play like we do you sometimes leave yourself open to getting kicked. Sometimes you’re relying on the referee to do his job properly, which sometimes doesn’t happen. Hopefully they’re not too serious,” Cooper said.
“Brad Smith looks like he won’t be fit for the weekend, Louis will be touch and go. Brad has just stretched it - it could be four or five days or it could be a couple of weeks.”
