THE future of Swindon Town is looking bright according to new under 18s coach Scott Lindsey.
Lindsey arrived at the club in July to replace Jamie Pitman, who has reverted back to his role of working with the under 13s through to under 16s.
With Town looking to become self sustainable, the youth set-up at the County Ground has become more important than ever, with Lindsey enjoying regular communication with first team boss Mark Cooper and assistant Luke Williams.
For that reason, Lindsey has been impressed with his new working environment, as well as with the group of players he has the pleasure of working with.
“I’ve been at the club for seven weeks now and the group I have here are fantastic, they buy into the way we want things done and have been great,” he said.
“I obviously have regular conversations with the manager and the assistant about how the first team play and how we can mirror that.
“I watch a lot of DVDs of the first team and analyse how they do things and one thing I’ve really noticed is how they’ve bought into what we’ve done. There’s no problems, no questions and they’re a hard-working group every day.
“They’re respectful around the building too which is very important.”
Will Randall, Lee Marshall, Tom Smith and Callum McCormack have all been in and around the Swindon Town first team throughout the pre-season and early days of the new campaign, which Lindsey believes shows there is a realistic pathway for players looking to make their way in Wiltshire.
“We’ve had a few around the first team which has been great and it’s so exciting to know there is a pathway though,” he said.
“There are coaches at other clubs who work with no end product, just doing it because it’s there, but at this club I feel there’s an end product because there’s a first team manager who shows a real interest as well as the people above.
“They want to grow players from within so this really is an ideal job because it really offers somewhere for the players to go.”
Town youngsters’ latest success came in a thrilling game at Newport on Saturday morning, the young Robins running out 6-4 winners.
After going 2-0 down inside the first 40 minutes, Luke Matthews grabbed one back with a header before Jake Evans equalised just before the break as he volleyed home to level the scores.
Newport took the lead once again soon after the break, before Callum McCormack levelled matters for a second time with a free-kick, before the same play burst through the home defence to give the visitors the lead for the first time.
The advantage didn’t last long as Newport hit back, making it 4-4, before Amir Gied finally gave Swindon the lead which would win the match before Tom Smith’s solo effort wrapped it up.
Lindsey was impressed with the way his youngsters performed, as well as with the levels of maturity they showed.
“The biggest thing for me is that we were really disciplined with our performance and that was great,” he said.
“We stuck to what we know we are good at which is keeping the ball on the ground and making the opposition chase us for it, and it was really pleasing to see us do that.”
