HIGHWORTH Town manager John Fisher says that he’s sick and tired of hearing other local managers passing comment on their lack of financial clout.
The Worthians deposited £1,500 of prize money in the coffers at the Elms as they progressed through the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup last weekend but Fisher is keen to see his counterparts concentrate on matters on the pitch.
“Every week I seem to see managers from (Wootton) Bassett or Shrivenham going on about how they don’t have a budget,” said the Highworth chief.
“They mention it all the time but they knew that when they took their jobs so if they don’t like it, they should leave. I wish they’d just talk about the football.
“We do have a budget and they don’t – that’s a fact. We play against sides with bigger budgets than us and I say fair play to them.
“I read that Shrivenham are going to buy a new lawnmower with their prize money and good luck; I hope it works.”
Fisher’s men travel to Oxford City Nomads on Saturday before going to local rivals Bassett on Bank Holiday Monday (kick-off 3pm) and despite his side beating Western League Bridport 3-2 in the cup last weekend, the Highworth boss is adamant that his need to improve this weekend.
“Nomads are a good side. If we play anything like we have done in the last two games, we won’t get anything,” said Fisher.
“I know that we’ve still been winning games but it should have been a lot more comfortable at Bridport. We need to get back to the way we played in the opening game at Reading, when we were really good.
“We’ve got Bassett on Monday and I know that we’ll be the favourites – I’d expect to go there and get three points.
“If we don’t win, I know that it’ll be headlines and all the rest of it.”
Paul Braithwaite’s Bassett make the trip to Flackwell Heath on Saturday before Monday’s derby with Highworth whilst Sam Collier’s Shrivenham face clashes with Cheltenham Saracens and Thatcham Town over the Bank Holiday weekend.
