SWINDON Town Ladies manager Steve Robertson can’t see any reason why his side can’t carve out a successful season after they started their new campaign with a five-star display against St. Nicholas yesterday.
Town, who are now plying their trade in the newly-formed FA Women’s Premier League South West Division One, got their season off to a sparkling start as they beat their Bristol opponents 5-1 at Shirvenham’s Barrington Park ground.
Boss Robertson, who also plays for yesterday’s hosts Shrivvy in the Hellenic League, saw his ladies fill their boots, with Beth Thompson hitting a brace whilst Sarah Uzzell, Chyna Collings and Ellie Maynard all got themselves on the scoresheet.
“It was a very good start from us and it was nice to see us score five goals,” said Robertson.
“We’ve started the season well but we know that it’s going to be a lot tougher next week when we play Charlton (in the determining round of the FA Women's Premier League Cup) – they won their game 12-1 on Sunday.
“I’ve had a look around at some of the other results in our league and the teams we expected to pick up wins seemed to do that.
“I just hope that we don’t carry on from what we were doing towards the end of last year, where we dropped quite a few points in games that we shouldn’t have.
“If we can avoid doing that, then I don’t see why we can’t go for that top spot – I think that we could definitely be in that top-four group with the additions we’ve made to the squad.
“We’ve got a good blend of experienced and younger players now. Sarah Uzzell is only 17 and Megan Attenborough, who we brought in from MK Dons, is only 16.
“Lisa Coe was also there yesterday but she wasn’t able to play because of her international clearance.”
Next Town make the trip to the Sporting Club Thamesmead centre for their cup clash with Charlton next Sunday (kick-off 2pm).
