ONE WAS a 25-yard stunner whilst the other was a tap-in from point-blank range but Fairford Town manager Gareth Davies knows exactly which goal from his side’s draw with Tytherington Rocks that he’ll be reminding his players of this week.
After midfielder Jordan Cobb spectacularly volleyed Fairford into the lead in South Gloucestershire, the hosts roared back to take a 2-1 lead into half-time thanks to goals from Szymon Gromek and Safian Skupinski.
But with Fairford throwing everything at Tytherington as they chased an equaliser, manager and defender Davies chucked himself up front and ended up levelling matters with around five minutes remaining to earn his team a point.
“I’ll definitely keep reminding them about it – they have been notified,” said the Cinder Lane chief.
“We were looking for a way to get back into the game and weren’t having any luck so I thought ‘why not give it a go?’ “I’m a defender by trade and I usually get about one or two a season but I ended up getting the equaliser with a five-yard tap-in.
“Jordan Cobb scored an absolute worldy and I said to him that there won’t have been a better goal that day in all of the leagues.
“But after that, we let them get back into the game. At the end of the day, we can be pretty happy with a point away from home.
“I think that Tytherington will surprise a few people this season, so it’s not a bad result at all.”
Fairford are without a fixture next weekend and aren’t in action again until they host Reading Town in the FA Vase on September 6, which gives Davies all the more opportunity to carry on reminding his men of his goal-scoring antics.
The Cinder Lane boss added: “We haven’t got a game next weekend and I think the boys are trying to organise a little bit of a male-bonding session.
“I’ll definitely keep reminding them of what happened last weekend but I think they’re a little bit sick of hearing about it already.”
