LOUIS Thompson believes that patience is going to be key to Swindon Town’s success this term.
The midfielder helped the County Ground men ease to a 2-0 success over Crewe on Saturday and that win was built on probing football.
And while at times it looked as if Swindon didn’t have any go forward momentum, their possession and work with the ball paid off.
“It is a 90 minute game and I’d urge everybody just to relax, just watch the game - today was a real footballing show,” Thompson told the Advertiser after match.
“If you get frustrated then you will start hitting long balls, trying to force things – that is where it starts to break down, that is where it will give the opposing team a bit of confidence.
“But if you are patient and calm on the ball you can pass down slowly – it is just about probing.
“You can beat them down and when they eventually get the ball they are so tired they’ll kick it back to you.
“Because we keep the ball and are being patient, they start to drop off. They can’t press you for 90 minutes all over the pitch.”
Thompson also hailed midfielder Ben Gladwin’s contribution to the side with the former Marlow Town player enjoying an impressive start to the campaign.
“Everyone knows what Ben is capable of, he is a cracking player,” Thompson said.
“Ben has been brilliant for the past couple of games – he is a real talent that boy.”
Of the win over Crewe the 19-year-old, who was back in the side after a one-match ban, added: “It did take a long time coming, but we were constantly probing.
“I had a couple of chances, a few of the other lads had chances as well - on another day that is 5/6-0 but we take the 2-0, move on to Tuesday now.”
