ANDY Williams may have celebrated his 28th birthday a fortnight ago, but tonight’s clash with Brighton and Hove Albion will bring back memories of day he turned 26.
The Swindon Town striker had joined the club on a free transfer from Yeovil Town in June 2012, but had to wait until August 14, his birthday, to make his debut for the Robins.
And that match was a Capital One Cup clash with tonight’s visitors to the County Ground - a game that Swindon won 3-0 thanks to an Alan Navarro double and a Paul Benson strike.
“Hopefully, we can recreate a similar situation on Tuesday night in front of a good crowd that will hopefully be here,” Williams said.
“That was my first game for Swindon and it was on my birthday as well, so it was a memorable occasion.”
Tonight’s game with the Seagulls should be one for the purists as both teams have developed a reputation for good passing football.
And Williams, who has scored twice in the last two games, is looking forward to being able to test himself against the Championship side.
“For the lovers of football it should be a good game,” he said. “The ball will be on the floor a lot of the time, passes will be high compared to most games at this level.
“We are trying to play a different brand of football at the moment and Brighton are in that category of clubs that like to play football as well – it could be an interesting game.
“They (Brighton) will have threats from all over the pitch, obviously they have lost a few of their threats up front.
“But they still have got some good players, good Championship players in (Craig) Mackail Smith. We will watch videos on the others that are threats.
“They have got plenty of quality going forward, so we will watch the videos and work out where their biggest strengths are and hopefully find a few weaknesses as well.”
After Town’s success over Brighton in 2012, Swindon went to reach the fourth round of the league cup knocking out Premier League side Stoke City along the way.
Last season Swindon defeated QPR before a meeting with Chelsea in front of the Sky cameras and Williams is hoping that Town will be able to produce another cup run.
“For the lads it is a nice (to have a cup run), hopefully we can progress and play some bigger sides like the lads did last year by playing Chelsea out here on Sky.
“(Having a cup) means you can play against higher teams and improve your profile – a lot more people come and watch you against Chelsea than they will against a lower league side.”
