SWINDON Supermarine boss Dave Webb saw the confidence restored to his side after their 4-2 win over Wantage.

The Webb’s Wood club have endured a miserable start to the season, losing four of their opening five games. Webb made several changes to the team that was unfortunate to go down 2-0 to Taunton Town on Saturday, as he looked to find the formula to bring about a change in results.

The success of those changes and the green shoots of recovery sprouting by the end yesterday’s game were the most pleasing aspects of the victory for Webb.

“We made a few changes to Saturday, which worked well. That was the most pleasing thing,” the Marine chief told the Advertiser.

“We played 4-4-2 and the front two functioned much better. It was a great overall team performance. Much more what I would expect from us.

“We need to keep winning and working on what we’re trying to do. We might have lost a bit of confidence with only one win in five games.

“Maybe for some who have lost confidence, they will get it back now. You could see the players starting to express themselves again, like something had lifted off their shoulders.”

Ross Adams got two goals, both headed, to take his tally to three since joining the club. It makes the former Basingstoke man Marine’s top scorer, a statistic that Webb said was not a good sign.

A strike from Luke Hopper sandwiched both of Adams’ efforts to give Marine a comfortabe 3-0 lead after 55 minutes.

Then, a mini-collapse threatened to spoil the afternoon after Dave Bampton had to go off injured. Firstly, Jimmy Deabill scored from a set-piece that Marine’s defence failed to deal with. Then Richie Guy took advantage of a slip at the back to give Wantage a sniff.

Kyle Lapham ensured his side rode that rocky patch in some fashion. Coming forward from left-back, the Marine man hit a great shot from the best part of 30 yards to make the game safe.

Reflecting post-match Webb declared himself pleased with the peformance, which he admitted was not perfect.

“It’s a good result after Taunton, I thought we unfortunate on Saturday when certain decisions didn’t go our way,” Webb said.
