SWINDON Spitfires made a convincing start to their South West Women’s Premier Division campaign with a 5-1 win over Bridgwater Town.
Spitfires drew first blood through Katie Wadey who latched onto a Beth Turner ball in from the right to give the home side a fifth minute lead.
Bridgwater responded well and were rewarded with an equaliser in the ninth minute.
Tamsin Kellett in the Spitfires’ goal was being kept busy as she tipped a shot round her post in the 25th minute and tipped another effort onto the bar just before half-time.
However Spitfires were always a threat going forward and they re-took the lead in the 41st minute when Karyn Coombs broke free and finished off the inside of the post.
After the break Spitfires took control, Ria Salleh and Coombs going close. Spitfires’ third came in the 56th minute, skipper Emma Skinner firing a free-kick into the area for Debbie Rose to power home with her head.
Wadey notched her second of the game in the 69th minuteand she completed an impressive hat-trick four minutes later after getting onto the end of a throw-in.
Meanwhile, Friday’s Women’s FA Cup draw saw Spitfires given a home tie against either Brislington or Downend Flyers in the First Qualifying Round on Sunday 28th September.
