SWINDON Storm bounced back from their disappointing defeat to Cornish Sharks with a fine 59-22 success at Torbay Trojans.
Torbay were always going to be a tough test after holding Oxford Saints to 18 points the week before but even with a depleted defence Swindon were the only team that looked like winning and finished in style with final score of 59-22 to Storm.
The first quarter was all Storm, using a fast tempo offence to pull out to an early lead thanks to solid blocking and a powerful rushing attack.
Each drive echoed the last with a series of runs that got Swindon into the red zone allowing Dan Thorne to punch in four touchdowns early on in the game.
The Trojans had little going forward to start with as Swindon’s stubborn defence didn’t allow a first down within the quarter bringing the score to 26-0.
Offensively Swindon never looked back, adding a passing touchdown to Brent Johnson-Flippance from inside the red zone bringing the score to 32-0.
Torbay’s offence came to life and after a few long plays on the outside they forced the ball over the line to get their first score of the day and avoid the shutout.
Not to be outdone Swindon kept driving downfield on offence leading to another rushing touchdown by Dan Thorne leaving the score at 39-6.
Torbay gathered some momentum on this depleted defence and added another score before half time, the 2 point conversion was good and the score was 39-14.
Storm sent running back Victor Ofoe on a sweep which he took to the house, 70 yards for a touchdown giving Swindon a comfortable 45-14 lead going into half time.
Swindon looked strongest again at the start of the second half with Aylwin Thorne-Griffith intercepting Torbay’s quarterback to give possession back to Storm.
Using the momentum from the interception Swindon’s offence pushed forward and now on the other side of the ball Aylwin Thorne-Griffith caught a slant pass and managed to dive into the end zone giving Swindon a 52-14 lead.
Torbay were still not finished and the second year team drove downfield and got on the scoreboard once again with a touchdown and converted 2 point attempt.
With the score at 52-22 coach Steve Bennett allowed more rookies to get reps and game experience as the match moved into the 4th quarter.
Even with players being rested, Swindon’s offence managed to drive downfield and get into position for Dan Thorne to run in his 6th touchdown of the game.
