WES Foderingham was glad his side held out against the late Sheffield United onslaught as he was not confident his teammates could have come through extra time against a resurgent Blades.

Matt Done and Che Adams struck in quick succession as the clock ticked into an agonising seven minutes of added time, levelling the score on the night and leaving the visitors one goal shy of forcing another 30 minutes.

Foderingham himself could not have done much more deny United on the night. In the build-up to the Done strike he had just made three remarkable stops.

Oddly, on a night when he conceded five, the keeper was largely blameless.

The same cannot be said of his defence, which buckled to a degree after injury denied them the services of skipper Nathan Thompson.

“(With seven minutes added on) it’s a bit of squeaky bum time. If they get another goal that means extra time and the momentum would have been with them,” Foderingham told the local media.

“I’m sure if they had scored another goal you would have heard a pin drop in the stadium. It was important we stayed switched on and defended properly for the last six or seven minutes of the game.

“Our defending has (almost) been our downfall, I don’t think there’s one thing in particular that has got us through. I think we made it a lot more difficult for ourselves really.

“We were our own worst enemy letting them back into the game.”

The game itself left Foderingham struggling to put into words his feelings. Despite his relatively tender years the keeper does not think he will ever play in its like again.

“I don’t think I’ll ever play a game like that again for the rest of my career,” he added.

“It was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. We started really well and got three goals up and I’d say a little bit of complacency (came into our game).

“I’m sure you’ll see a lot of errors in that game, but come Wembley hopefully you’ll see a much calmer Swindon Town.”
