SWINDON Spitfires stalwarts Chris and Bev Maull have been left overwhelmed after being nominated for the FA and McDonald’s People’s Award.
The husband and wife team will head to the 2015 Community Awards at Wembley next month, after winning the regional FA and McDonald’s Community Award Outstanding Contribution to Community Football category in Wiltshire.
Since joining Swindon Spitfires in 1967 and 1970, the pair have been instrumental figures around the club.
Despite having already won the BBC West Unsung Hero award and the Adver’s lifetime achievement earlier this year, Bev Maull is still shocked when they get recognition for their work, but need the votes of the public to win this prestigious crown.
“It is nice for me and Chris but it is good for the club as well because it is giving them the recognition,” she said. “A lot of people still don’t know about Swindon Spitfires and how long we have been going for so it is good publicity for the club.
“We just do it for the fun and the enjoyment of putting something back and helping others to progress in their football.
“It is just overwhelming, it is fantastic to be recognised by other people for the work you are doing.
“We are Spitfires through and through, and everybody jokes that if you cut us open, like a stick of rock, we’d have Spitfires through the middle.
“The club has been going for so long, you want it to keep progressing, and you don’t ever want to see it fall.
“We have had hard times and we have come through them and pushed on again and that is the main thing, to keep the club going for as long as we can.”
