SWINDON Storm brought the curtain down on their campaign last weekend but were unable to prevent Oxford Saints from posting a perfect regular season.
At Tilsley Park in Abingdon, Storm played their 10th and final match in BAFA National League SFC Two West but were thrashed 50-6 by their near neighbours, who topped the standings.
Travelling with a squad of just 19 – their hosts had 60 men kitted out – Swindon found themselves under the cosh, with Saints’ James Walter touching down and Sam Fielden adding the extra point.
Oxford found themselves 14-0 ahead after Ryan Kingsholt’s touchdown, converted by Fielden, and an intercepted Storm pass allowed Walter to score, Fielden again adding another extra point.
Before half-time, Ryan Kingshott charged through and Saints added two more points to stretch the lead to 29-0, Destin Maulding feeding Sam Armstrong.
In the third quarter, Tony Glover, Kev Brooks and Walter ran in further scores, with Fielden adding another point-after and Kingshott bagging a two-point conversion.
But in the final quarter, there was finally something to shout about for Storm as Brent Johnson-Flippance raced in.
In response, Saints’ Walter got his fourth touchdown to round off defeat for Swindon, who finished fourth with a record of 3-7.
