SWINDON Town head coach Luke Williams expects to see director of football Tim Sherwood glued to his phone now that the January sales are in full swing.
Having arrived upstairs at the County Ground in November, Sherwood was handed a leading role in guiding Town’s transfer policy by chairman and close friend Lee Power, and with the window now open, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa manager has the chance to set his contacts book to work.
Swindon have made little secret of their desire to bring in reinforcements this month – heightened further by Michael Doughty and Darnell Furlong’s early return to parent club Queens Park Rangers on Monday – and Williams has faith that Sherwood’s connections will bear fruit.
“He’s connected with every single top club in the country and has got a fantastic reputation of working with young players and getting the best out of them, so I should think that Tim will have as many people approaching him as he’s approaching other people,” said Williams.
“So there should be lots of networking going on and that’s fantastic for us.”
With Sherwood identifying targets and Power controlling the purse strings, Williams is taking a back seat as far as recruitment is concerned.
The Town head coach cannot yet confirm which positions his club are keen to strengthen in but as a result of Furlong’s departure, Williams is certain that right-back will be among those earmarked for reinforcement.
When asked what positions Swindon are targeting, he said: “Not as precise as that yet but I will be told when it becomes relevant to me and I look forward to working with the new players.
“I’m very confident we’ll have players in. I, as always, don’t get involved heavily in that side of things. I trust people at the club whose job it is to bring players in and that will happen – I’ve got no doubt.
“We’re all pulling in the same direction, so when they come in, I don’t know exactly but I expect them sooner rather than later “Bradley Barry, of course, is there (at right-back) and he’s an outstanding player – let’s not forget that he was (players’) player of the season last year and involved in almost every single game, so we’ve got a fantastic player that’s just come back from an injury, who’s ready to step in.
“I think it would be sensible for us to consider bringing (in) reinforcement in that position as well.”
