SWINDON’S Jazz Carlin lost her British 200m freestyle crown as she was forced to settle for a bronze medal in tonight’s final in Sheffield.
Last year’s double Olympic silver medallist in Rio, enjoyed a successful winter training camp in Mexico, before returning to the pool for the British Championships this week.
Carlin had secured a final berth with a fifth fastest time in the heats this morning and while she was able to improve on that time, clocking one minute 59.59 seconds, it was only enough to secure a third place on the podium, with Ellie Faulkner winning ahead of Kathryn Greenslade.
The 25-year-old, who now lives in Bradford on Avon, secured a season’s best time of 1:57.62 on her way to gold two years ago.
However, Carlin was not able to emulate that form, a time that would have beaten Faulkner’s winning time of 1:57.88.
Carlin was half a second off the pace at the first turn in Sheffield as Lucy Hope, who finished in fourth, touched first.
The Bath University swimmer, was even further back come the halfway mark, as Faulkner picked up here tempo to take the lead and leave Carlin more than a second behind.
As is traditional with Carlin, she was able to close the gap in the closing stages but she could not do enough.
Carlin started this morning’s heat seven at a more leisurely pace and was not in the top three at the first turn as Hattersley lead out in 28.22 seconds.
Carlin, stepped up a gear after the turn and was leading by 0.05 of a second at the hallway mark, in a time of 59.12 seconds.
The Tigersharks swimmer had extended her lead to 0.29 seconds heading into the final 50m and clocked a time of two minutes 0.99 seconds to secure her place in the final.
