IT WAS a clean sweep of the end-of-season awards for Swindon Town goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux last weekend.

As well as a landslide victory in the Swindon Advertiser Player of the Season award, the 23-year-old also claimed the Supporters’ Club, SAS Travel and the Disabled Group gongs.

Not a bad haul for a player who had no ambition of being a goalkeeper at a younger age but has learnt from some of the best in the game.

“I didn’t really watch any goalkeepers when I was younger, I always wanted to play outfield,” he explained.

“I went in goal when I was 13 or 14 and I always try to watch a style. I liked David De Gea when he was younger at Atletico Madrid, I always watched him because I have got the same sort of build as he has, so I looked up to him a little bit.

“I have trained with some quality goalkeepers. (Heurelho) Gomes, in particular, who I thought was unbelievable when I trained with him and I always looked up to as well.

“I always tried to take bits and pieces from all the goalkeepers I trained with, so I would like to say I am a bit of all of them.”

Vigouroux’s impact on the Town dressing room has also not gone amiss and he hopes he can have the same positive impact on the younger members of the squad as the likes of Gomes had on him.

“I am only 23 but I feel like I am quite experienced for my age and I feel like I can pass that experience on to players that haven’t played as many games or haven’t had as many opportunities as they would have liked,” he added.

“(They need to) just keep their head down and keep training well and that’s what we need to do.

“If I can help in any way, I will always do it.

“We have got great young players coming through like Will Henry and Scott Twine, Jordan Young, they are unbelievable talents for their age and if I can pass on any advice to them, from being at two of the top clubs in the country, then I will always do that.”
