DAVID Flitcroft was anxiously waiting the medical bulletin ahead of Saturday’s key League Two trip to Accrington Stanley amid fears that Tuesday night’s loss to Forest Green Rovers could have cost Swindon Town more than just their place in the Checkatrade Trophy.
As his squad licked their wounds following their second-round exit at the hands of the Gloucestershire side – three days after being ousted from the FA Cup by Stevenage – Flitcroft had his fingers crossed for positive news regarding midfielder Amine Linganzi and forwards Luke Norris and Paul Mullin, all of whom were substituted in the second half of the County Ground reverse.
Worryingly, all three appear to have been struggling with problems related to previous injuries suffered, Norris limping out of the fray with an ankle problem, having withdrawn from the warm-up before the recent league defeat at Grimsby after rolling an ankle.
Linganzi, meanwhile, appeared to be troubled by a similar problem to the hamstring strain that saw him exit Town’s 2-2 draw with Chesterfield on November 11 after just four minutes and miss the subsequent three matches.
Mullin was troubled by a problem preparing for the Yeovil match and missed out at Grimsby before returning for the three most recent games and departed on Tuesday with a groin issue.
Flitcroft was hoping for an update from his medical team yesterday as he plotted how to arrest his side’s poor run of four straight defeats against a Stanley outfit beaten just once in six League Two games.
“I am not too sure how expensive the (Forest Green) game is until we get the news on the injuries and we find out how Amine, Mulls and Luke are,’’ he said.
“It could be a costly night. It is an ongoing problem with Paul Mullin. He felt probably the best he has felt on Saturday and got through some good work but he just felt a bit of a twinge in the groin area.
“Luke Norris just felt his ankle injury, so there is obviously a weakness there, and Amine just tightened up again. We will have a look at it and assess it from there.’’
#Town are still waiting on the return of left-back Chris Hussey, who saw a mooted return last month put back after a training setback, while Donal McDermott is also close to fitness after his lengthy ankle ligament injury.
“It was a big day on Wednesday in terms of the injuries we are carrying from Tuesday’s game and potentially knowing where Chris (Hussey) is,’’ added Flitcroft. “We will be touching base with the specialist to see where Chris is.
“Donal (McDermott) came through a non-contact training session on Tuesday so we will see how he reacts to that. We might possibly have one of them back to the Accrington trip.
“We have got Tom Smith and James Brophy back so we will be okay. They have benefitted from going out on loan and are ready.
“We have Wednesday, Thursday and Friday that will hopefully give us time to get the players back where we want them.”
