MATT Taylor has thrown his support behind Town goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook ahead of tomorrow’s crunch League Two clash against Cheltenham Town.
Charles-Cook, who joined Town from Coventry on transfer deadline day in August last year, has played 24 games since moving to Wiltshire – conceding 32 goals.
A number of unfortunate late goals has prompted some fans to question Charles-Cook’s position as first team goalkeeper.
But Taylor insists the 23-year-old is the man for the job and highlighted the pressure all goalkeepers come under.
He said: “As a goalkeeper, you make a mistake and it gets highlighted. You understand that when you take on the position and the profession for a living.
“If you miss a shot or misplace a pass as a midfielder the consequences are far less.
“For me, Cookie has made some vital saves for us this season.
“It’s a shame for him because at times the type of errors he’s made means we haven’t got the results we deserve.
“But that’s being a goalkeeper. You look historically at the best goalkeepers and they’ve made mistakes too.”
Taylor was speaking after ending his first week as Swindon Town’s interim manager, and he admits the week has been a positive one where players have offered everything they can.
“We had a positive session on Thursday where we got a lot of detail in and worked very hard,” said Taylor.
“At the moment I’m doing everything in my power and to the best of my ability.
“Nowadays even if you do have a contract with a football club you can’t focus beyond the next game.
“I’m still a player, but I’ve been asked – and happily to do so – to be in the role I am.”
Taylor watched Cheltenham draw 1-1 with Notts County on Tuesday evening, and he was impressed by the club’s two loanees from Bristol City in Taylor Moore and Joe Morrell.
While Cheltenham boss Gary Johnson admits Swindon will be a ‘different challenge’ under Taylor’s management, the 36-year-old midfielder said Saturday’s game is about Swindon Town.
He said: “They’re a good team. The game’s a local derby so it will be a bit feisty as well and some added spice with it being my first game it charge.
“But it’s about Swindon Town, we’ll do all the scouting we can do on Cheltenham but this is about us – and that’s what I’ve told the lads.”
