ON-LOAN Brentford midfielder Canice Carroll is hoping Richie Wellens does not throw him in at right-back any more, and stated defensive midfield is where he feels he can play his best football.
Since making his debut for Town in the dramatic 2-1 victory away at Macclesfield in the right-back position, Carroll has featured there three more times in starts against Tranmere and Crawley as well as a shift there in the offensive reshuffle against Lincoln.
The 20-year-old came under a fair amount of criticism for his performances at right back while playing in the 1-0 defeat to Crawley, but defended himself by stating right-back does not bring out the best side of his game.
Carroll admitted he can be his own worst critic and can sometimes be too hard on himself, but insists he just wants to get better and will play anywhere on the pitch if told to as it will add another dimension to his game.
Carroll said: “I’m very harsh on myself, but I think that’s a good thing because it just means that I always want perfection.
“I see it as a good thing because I always want to get better and I am very hard on myself, I know that, but it’s just the way I am and the way I play.
“I don’t see me playing right-back as a long-term thing at all.
“I’ll play there if I have to play there – if I have to play left wing then I’ll play left wing. But for me, I want to play in defensive midfield so I get to tackle people and I get to go forward sometimes.
“It’s not for me, playing right back and getting crosses into the box, it’s not my game.
“It is good for me to do though, so I can learn another area of my game. But defensive midfield is more for me, that’s where I’m comfortable and it feels at home.”
In the seven games that Carroll has played since signing, he has only been on the losing side once while receiving two yellow cards in what turned out to be victories.
Tackling is something that the former Oxford player claims to enjoy and is more than happy to make his presence known in midfield with his combative play if it means that Town’s forwards can continue to be successful.
He said: “I feel at home in the defensive midfield position.
“It’s the type of area where you get to break play up, tackle people, maybe leave a little bit on them to let them know they’re in for a game.
“I can set the play up for the forwards to go and do what they do and score us goals.
“I’m not a goal scorer or assist maker, but I like to think I do my job quite well and let the team use me as a base to go and win us the game.”
