ON-LOAN Swindon Town striker Eoin Doyle has been named as League Two’s Player of the Month for October.
Despite missing Town’s first league fixture of the month against parent club Bradford City, Doyle topped the division’s scoring chart for the month with ease.
The 31-year-old Irishman scored in all four of Swindon’s other games, notching six in total, including a hat-trick in the 4-0 success away at Crawley Town.
With 14 goals to his name from 14 League Two appearances at Swindon this season, even manager Richie Wellens has been taken by surprise.
Wellens said: “I didn’t think he would score as many as he has, I’m going to be honest.
“Last season, we received a lot of stick when we drew four games on the spin (against Yeovil Town, Newport County, Oldham Athletic and Cambridge United) while hunting for the play-offs.
“We played brilliant in those games, we dominated the ball and defended well. We’re doing the same now but we have Eoin there to score.
“If we had Eoin last season, we would’ve made the play-offs.”
Although Doyle will deservedly receive the plaudits off the back of his award, Wellens pointed to his squad’s entire collective performance levels as the reason behind Town’s current position in League Two’s automatic promotion places.
Mathieu Baudry, Anthony Grant and Lloyd Isgrove – among others – have shone and resulted in Town’s best start to a season for several years.
And the Town boss is flummoxed as to why more members of his team are not included in the top-10 ranked players on WhoScored – an app he has used to track players’ records.
“I keep looking at the Team of the Year (on WhoScored) – how players are scoring 8.7 out of 10 and so on,” said Wellens.
“We’ve got one player in the top 10 (Eoin Doyle). Who is judging these? Whoever has watched our 17 games so far and decided to include one player in the Team of the Year doesn’t know football.
“I’m looking at some of the players and thinking: ‘How are they in there?’
“I’m pleased Eoin won Player of the Month. If he didn’t win, it would’ve been a joke.”
Unfortunately for Town fans, it appears unlikely that Doyle will appear in tomorrow’s FA Cup first-round clash away at local rivals Cheltenham Town.
Two of Swindon’s six loan signings are cup tied, with Wellens understandably refused to publicly reveal those who will be missing.
However, he did say: “Jerry Yates got pushed out to the right last week and didn’t moan.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Jerry back up front. I think we’ll go 4-4-2 on Saturday.”
