DAVID Howell was left to rue a dreadful third round at the BMW PGA Championship as a bogey-littered score of 80 heavily contributed to his tied-65th-place finish.
A hole-in-one during the former Broome Manor pro's second round was surely the highlight of his week as Howell made the cut with ease following a Friday round of 68 which left him four-under-par for the tournament, held at Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey.
However, the 2006 champion endured a horrible weekend in which he shot an eight over par round on the Saturday before following that up with a two-over-par round on Sunday.
The 45-year-old may be able to take some consolation from the fact he made the cut for the second tournament in a row, however, while securing 13,470 euros from his week's work.
Not to mention the vital 17.1 points the Swindon golfer secured in his bid to secure his European Tour card for next season.
When last weekend's action got underway for Howell, his opening hole would start the same way as it had done on Thursday - with a bogey on the first.
A further bogey was picked up on the fourth before a triple bogey caused Howell's tournament score to dip over par for the first time since his very first hole of the week.
The two-time Ryder Cup winner gave another shot back to the course on the 10th before picking up his only birdie on Saturday on the par-five 12th - a hole Howell birdied on all four days.
Yet, three further bogeys followed as Howell finished Saturday eight-over and four-over for the tournament.
Sunday once again started with a bogey on the first, and another came on the seventh prior to the former Broome Manor pro rolling in an excellent putt on the eighth for birdie.
Howell's back nine reflected his score on Saturday as he marked bogey on 10 before a birdie on 12.
The 45-year-old scored further bogeys on 14 and 17 before ending his wretched weekend on a positive note by securing a birdie on the 18th to finish on six-over par for the tournament.
Howell is set to compete in the Scottish Championship this week at Fairmont St Andrews.
